Christmas Party with a Twist!

"Gladys" was invited to a Senior's Christmas Party. The ladies were all excited because they were doing something a little different this year. They were planning to wear dresses to match the color of their husband's hair. When they explained this to "Gladys" ~ she decided that she would not be able to attend. When asked why ~ she explained that her husband is BALD and she had NO IDEA how to iron all of the wrinkles from her "birthday suit" ~

Moral of this story ~ go to the parties, eat more food, fill in your wrinkles!! ENJOY ~

I'm "Gladys Friday"......aren't you?

"All Ears"

An elderly gentleman finally went to the doctor about his hearing. He recommended a hearing aid. He was fitted, returned for his check up to discover that his hearing was back to 100%.

The doctor said, "I'm sure your family must be very happy for you" and the gentleman said, "I haven't told them.......but I can hear them so well that I have changed my will 3 times already."

Moral of this story ~ speak only words that you would be proud to share.

I'm "Gladys Friday" today, aren't you? Enjoy your weekend.

"The OLD Dog"

I hope you've all had a great week!

I was visiting with some friends this week and when "Bernice" and I came in from shopping, we noticed her husband and their dog curled up on the couch watching TV.

Bernice said, "What would you like for dinner love? Chicken, beef or lamb?" and Archie responded, "Why, thank you Bernice, I'll have the chicken" and she quickly said, "Not YOU, I was talking to the dog, you're having LEFT-OVERS and you can get up and fix 'em yourself!"
Ain't love GRAND? The sweet life of a dog ~ think about it.

Have a great weekend, I'm "Gladys Friday"

Denise Price Thomas and "Gladys Friday" are honored after having been confirmed this week as speakers for:
The Joint Commission Annual Conference on Quality and Patient Safety ~ June 2010

Thanksgiving Dinner with Family, Friends & Twins

We had a lovely Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday. I had invited some of my friends to join our family. While having dinner, I overheard a conversation with two of my most elderly friends, one said to the other, "I'm so sorry to ask this....but please tell me your name, I know it....and remember that we have known each other for a very long time, I just can't remember your NAME for the life of me!"

The other friend sat there for a moment and said....."That's fine, I understand, I do that too......but how soon do you need to know it?"

I walked up, put my arms around each of "the old maid twins", calling them by name, thinking that would solve the issue. They looked up at me and said, "now just who are you young lady, do we know you?"

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! A great time to reflect on our many blessings, being with family, friends, fun and food all around.

By the way, a "Gladys Hint" ~ I have discovered the best way to get chocolate home without it melting in the car, is to EAT IT ON THE WAY....it worked for me....of course, I'm wearing it today!

I'm "Gladys Friday" and I'm sure you are too!

"Speeding Senior"

On the way to "Gladys Friday's" speaking engagement this week, she was in a hurry to get there and was pulled over by a policeman....lights, camera, action! Could it be "Papa Rotsy" (media) she wondered. She thought for a brief moment that she was going to be in the movies or was being escorted to the event.......but it didn't turn out that way.

The officer asked, "Mam, why are you traveling SO FAST?" and she said, "Well Officer, when you are MY AGE, you have to get there in a hurry BEFORE you FORGET WHERE you are going......and another thing, since when did they start letting 'kids' be policemen?"

He must have thought "Gladys" looked like his "Grandmother" ~ because she arrived at the event EARLY as he led the way.

I'm "Gladys Friday" today, aren't you?

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm already counting my blessings.

"Gladys Friday" ~ Family Reunion

"Gladys Friday's" husband wasn't real excited about going to her out of town family reunion. He was complaining and whining the entire way. Getting closer to their destination, "GLADYS" saw a beautiful hillside, where cows were grazing, there were pigs, goats and chickens just enjoying the beautiful day. How lovely! (she thought)

Her "SPOUSE" noticed the pleasant smile that "Gladys" had on her face and always wishing to wipe that smile OFF, he asked her, "you see any of YORE relatives over THAR?" While KEEPING that smile ON her face "Gladys" said, "YES, I SHORE DO, I SEE ALL OF MY IN-LAWS!"

Moral of the story: There are always two ways to look at things. Find the way that makes you SMILE.

Enjoy your day. I'm "Gladys Friday" aren't you?

"Gladys Friday" along with DPT Consulting & Training enjoyed speaking this week to those attending the support group meetings held at Gaston Memorial Hospital. They weathered the stormy weather, winds and rain and they let the fun~shine in! We saw the results of "Laughter is Like a Medicine" Lovely groups - great people! Thank you all.

Happy Birthday to my friend, Bernice. She is turning 102 today!

I asked her what the BEST THING was about turning 102 and she said, "No peer pressure!"

I asked her what the WORST THING was about turning 102 and she said, "My body is making the same noises that my coffee maker makes!"

Happy Birthday Bernice!!

Estate Planning 101

Note from a friend of mine ~

Dan was a single guy living at home with his

father and working in the family business.

When he found out he was going to inherit

a fortune when his sickly father died,

he decided he needed a wife

with which to share his fortune. One evening

at an investment meeting he spotted the most

beautiful woman he had ever seen.

Her natural beauty took his breath away.

'I may look like just an ordinary man,' he said to

her, 'but in just a few years, my father will die, and

I'll inherit 20 million dollars.'

Impressed, the woman obtained his business

card and three days later she became his

STEPMOTHER.

(Women are so much better at estate

planning than men.)

"Gladys Friday" crosses the line......

Well, she did it! She crossed the line......lots of lines, state lines that is. "Gladys Friday", Denise along with her grandson Jordan and friend Gayle.....left for the state of Massachusetts last Saturday for speaking engagements. We had a great trip and met many wonderful people. Please allow me to fill you in on the fun:

We flew in to Boston and learned shortly after that my luggage had been checked by TSA. They left me a nice little note saying they had been there. I would have LOVED to have had a camera rolling when they FOUND "GLADYS" in my suitcase!!! Think about it, a nurse's white two piece DRESS UNIFORM, white pantyhose, white "stuffing," large white nurses shoes, a stethoscope from the 6o's, a clipboard and chart, bifocals, gray wig (only her hairdresser 'Anne' knew for sure) and a bag of TOOTSIE ROLLS (aka snuff) Ya just can't hide CLASS! Doesn't it make you wonder what must have been going through their minds?

In Boston, we rode the bus, the subway, the taxi, the shuttle, the van and THE DUCK TOUR! AWESOME.......visited lots of Massachusetts history on land and then into the water the amphibious vehicle goes...into ~ The Charles River ~ truly awesome with the sunshine reflecting upon the water on a 70* day and the leaves on the trees were beginning to change. It was breathtaking! We also learned that these amphibious vehicles were built and used in Normandy.......and that WOMEN built them because the men were away. So THAT'S why they are still working so well, don't ya think ladies?

We took a taxi for our retail therapy session. I asked "May I please ride up front, I sometimes have motion sickness" and the taxi driver said, "Yes, but you can't play with my knee" and Gayle from the back seat says...."YOU WISH" As I am buckling up in the front seat, I said, "So, how are YOU?" and he said "YEW, I'm not a SHEEP!?!?!" We called him back to pick us up from our retail therapy, it was love at first sight! He thought I had the accent, what's up with THAT? I quickly informed him that we were proud to be from North CAROLIIIIIINA.

The back to back presentations / performances (Denise & Gladys) went very well and the audiences loved the Southern Drawl. The New England Quality Care Alliance Fall Forum was held at Lombardo's, where we met new friends who are physicians, nurses and many other very important members of the healthcare team, event planners and vendors. A couple vendors didn't quite know whether "Gladys" was real......they just kinda looked......and looked again. You KNOW I had fun with that. I just went right along with it like "Gladys" was for REAL and she IS. One physician told me that "Gladys" reminded him of his nurse from Alabama. So taking it as a compliment, "Gladys" took a dip and then she thanked him. He also said how proud he was of his new whoopee cushion that she gave him. He needed a new one, he said. He had a "blow-out!"

Many thanks to Jordan ~ grandson / cameraman who will soon compose a mini-movie for the website and to Gayle for stuffing papers and stuffing "Gladys" preparing her for her performances while we each STUFFED ourselves with BOSTON CREMES. Pretty soon Gladys will not need any STUFFING! She's making her own. Having Jordan and Gayle along was wonderful!!!!

We found a DELICIOUS Italian restaurant (my favorite) named "Lascala's" where we became "regulars" in only 3 days.

Then off to the airport again. On Wednesday morning, we left the hotel at 8:30 am, we arrived in Charlotte at 1:30 pm, got in the car and drove straight to Asheville for more back to back presentations / performances starting Thursday at 9 am. Denise & "Gladys" spoke for the Allergy Partners Corporate meeting which was held at The Double Tree Hotel in Asheville, another beautiful place. Great group of physicians, nurses, and other important healthcare leaders from many states. Denise & "Gladys" had fun all over again. One nurse kept looking everywhere for her "bag of P-CANS" she said, so "Gladys" tried to help her.....looking for a bag of urinals......only to learn the lady was from the north and was really looking for "PEE-CONS"

We completed the day with lunch on the veranda of The Grove Park Inn, outside where the sun was shining and the leaves were turning. I tried my best to catch just one leaf as it turned, the magic of our Creator never ceases to amaze me. How Great Thou Art!

It was a GREAT experience! We traveled over 1500 miles in 5 days, met many wonderful people = brand new friends. We have now clicked our heels (yes, mine are red patent) and we are safely home. Someone asked me, "do you were heels every day?" and I said "only when I'm awake!"

Counting my blessings.....still counting. I'm "Gladys Friday" aren't you? Enjoy your weekend.

Hugs to go ~ ~

"Brand New Mommy"

I enjoyed seeing so many Breast Cancer Survivors and friends last night at the "Breast Cancer Awareness Kick Off Event" on the lawn of Gaston Memorial Hospital. What a wonderful night! Thank you for allowing me to participate.

RX: One large dose of humor while healing ~ to be taken PRN

When I was a brand new Mommy, having my first beautiful baby girl.....I didn't know much about "Mommy~Hood" but couldn't wait to play with her, dress her up and show her off. The day after her delivery, while recovering in the "ward" along with 7 others, the "Sergeant Nurse" (BIG STRONG MILITARY voice) entered my room with a big needle. She said "roll over, I need to give you a shot!" (wonderful compassion-real early in the morning) Being the young Mommy that I was, I asked "What's the shot for?" and she said "it's to dry up your milk!" and I responded....."I haven't had anything at all to drink"......she rolled her eyes and with a big sigh, gave me the shot anyway.....along with that wonderful dose of compassion.

Denise Price Thomas & "Gladys Friday" are flying to Massachusetts tomorrow for "their" presentations for New England Quality Care Alliance. Nice that we can share one seat on the plane, one ticket for two speakers!

"They" will fly home, drive to Asheville, NC ~ same day ~ and present to the Allergy Partners of the Piedmont the following day.

"We" are looking forward to the events!

"Lesson for Mommy"

Almost out to lunch

I was working at my desk this week, trying to catch up on a lot of things. I needed some peace and quiet.....so I asked my assistant to place the DND (Do Not Disturb) sign on my door which I had pulled slightly closed.

Well, I began eating my lunch, catching up on my work when all of a sudden, I found myself choking on my sandwich.....I COULD NOT BREATHE! I leeped from the desk, flung open the door, began frantically waving my arms and everyone just kept walking down the hallway as if they didn't even see me. I couldn't yell, I couldn't speak, it was HORRIBLE! I threw myself over the back of my chair and after a couple minutes (that seemed like an eternity), I finally was able to catch my breath.

After doing so, I walked over to the staff, asked why no one would stop and try to help me......after all, we are IN healthCARE. They just looked at me and said, "because of the sign on your door......we thought it was a drill". It seems that my assistant had "accidentally" placed the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) sign on my door.

It's just great to work in healthcare! Never a dull moment.

I'm always "Gladys Friday"... aren't you?

Gladys Friday will be speaking (along with Denise Price Thomas):

"A Trip Down Memory Lane"

My friend, GG is so wonderfully thoughtful! She invited "Gladys" to take a trip down Memory Lane to Columbia, SC with her. She said we would visit her hometown, see where she grew up, the first house that her family built, visit her high school and have lunch with her high school friends, one of which owned the upscale restaurant where we would all be meeting for lunch. It was a Steel Magnolia kind of day.....but no one died....which was a much better ending! The town had wonderful trees, historic homes, sidewalks with people walking, smiling and enjoying life. It was great!

Her friends were wonderful! Diane, from "Diane's on Divine"(the nice upscale restaurant) wasn't on Divine, she was working in her Deli instead so I didn't get to meet her. I did meet Mimi, owner of the local newspaper (that wanted my frilly blouse - it was love at first site), Betty, retired from Texaco, Sylvia, retired nurse, Anne, a retired realtor, Wanda, best friend from elementary, Kay, retired from Columbia College and is a realtor now and Carrie Ann, with that sweet smile at the end of the table.....the quiet one. Nice to meet you ALL!

Afterwards, we went shopping at Chico's and then by the church where GG and Joel were married. "Gladys Friday" was very excited! It was a great day.

So, "Gladys," wanting to return the favor, invited GG to take a trip down HER Memory Lane the following week. We went by the first and only house that "Gladys" lived in until she was married (at age 16). We went through the neighborhood (keeping doors LOCKED) where "Gladys" picked up her best friend to "drag Shoney's." We had lunch at The Little Barn where we split a corn dog.....with mustard and sat out under the oak tree, swatting flies, making memories. We went shopping at The Family Dollar where my best friend from high school had given "Gladys" her family discount so she was able to furnish her first house (at age 16). We then went by "Gladys" high school which now has a 10 foot fence with barbed wire around the top of it and "Gladys" took Gayle by the bleachers to show her where she "got her FIRST kiss"!!!!!!! The same bleachers where her daughter, a year later stood, clapped and cheered as she watched "Gladys" (her Mommy) graduate!!!! "Gladys" was SO PROUD to see her sweet little smiling face. Now that's some "show and tell." Ain't life just grand?

I'm "Gladys Friday" today, aren't you?

How "SUITE" it is.....

Well if you have ever had a colonoscopy or an endoscopy, you have been to the "ENDO / COLO SUITE" ...... nothing really "sweet" about it. Working there would have it's pros and cons, I guess, think about it:

~ "There's ALWAYS a light at the end of the tunnel"

~ "This too, shall pass"

~ "No two "DAZE" are the same"

~ "There's not a lot of "stuff" you have to put up with"

~ "It'll all come out in a wash"

~ "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine" (takes on a whole new meaning)

~ ~ and ~ ~

~ "IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO LOOK UP OLD FRIENDS!"

I'm "Gladys Friday" ...... aren't you? Enjoy your weekend.

Remember to invite Gladys and Denise to your next event (two for one)

Doctor's visit

I went along with a friend to see her doctor this week.  She's been telling me that he wasn't really helping her and he didn't seem to have enough time for her.  As she began telling him that she is very sick for the first 30 minutes every day when she gets up..... he interrupted her and said, "set your clock 30 minutes later then!" and he started out the door.

She said, "wait just a minute please doctor, this is real, are you even listening to me" and the doctor said "NEXT!"

I guess not.......the name should have clued us in................
Physician:  "Dr. I. B. Quick" @ "Juan Minit Clinic"

"I can see clearly now"

"Gladys Friday" was traveling to the beach ~ convoy behind her, was the chaperone and no one wanted to ride with her, that wasn't cool.  So, as she drove her Honda down the fast lane, windows down,  listening to music, singing along with the radio, enjoying the day......she noticed everyone behind her putting their windshield wipers on.

They pulled over for a lunch break and EVERYONE was complaining about the "junk" all over their windshield, not "Gladys," she had a clear view.  After much research and piecing the puzzle together, her OIL was spilling ALL OVER everyone behind her.....but "she could see clearly now." Everyone got a FREE CAR WASH.......present from "Gladys"

Special of the Month

Healthcare changes bring home visits back.  Soon we will be able to make one phone call, have the "expert" come to our home, clean the drain, perform a colonoscopy;  repair the leak in the drain, perform bladder check.....with one phone call.....same person does it all.

Insurance "should" pay most all of the fee but you will be required to mortgage your home for the balance.  Now that's "special" wouldn't you say?

Shiney Brains

So.....the Grandpa was visiting the grandchildren.  The 3 year old was sitting on his shoulders.  He said, "Grandpa, I see your brains!" and Grandpa said...."you do, what do they look like?" and the grandchild said, "they're REAL SHINEY!"  The Grandpa decided to join the "hair club for men"

The Senior View

Today I observed two elderly gentlemen sitting beside each other in the park.  One said to the other, "You know Fred, I feel pretty good to be 87 years old."  Fred looked over and replied......"Yeah, I feel pretty good myself, in fact I feel like a baby........I'm bald.....I have no teeth and I think I may have just wet my pants!"

I'm "Gladys Friday".......aren't you?  I hope you've had a good one.

Who's smile is it anyway?

Well, there's just NEVER a dull moment in senior-ville

So......the senior down the hall lost his teeth, he looked everywhere all day, had everyone helping in the search.  That evening, he had a bright smile, proudly showing everyone his moment of happiness.  10 minutes later, the lady down the hallway came out of her room asking, "has anyone seen my TEETH?"

Reminds me of my new song: (just written for this special occasion)
                    ~~ you'll recognize the tune ~~

Wasting away again in senior-ville
Searching for my teeth and my cane
Some people say that there's another to blame
But I know......I did know her name.....

I'm "Gladys Friday".....aren't you?

Enjoy your 4th, don't drink a 5th or you will be sick on the 6th.

Great Group of Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church

"Gladys Friday" sends a GREAT BIG "THANK YOU!" to Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church......you are a great group!   "Gladys" enjoyed meeting everyone and appreciated that warm, heartfelt welcome.  When "she" saw your smiles, heard your laughter and saw tears of happiness rolling down your faces, "she" was happy. YOU made HER day!

Thank you all for bringing "Boost & Ensure" for Cancer Services of Gaston County. Your kindness and generosity will provide liquid nutrition for many patients right here in our county. Thank you so much for participating in a "BYOB Health, Hope & Humor" party ~ (for those that do not know.....BYOB = bring your own Boost ~ per Gladys Friday).

The Boost & Ensure will help stock the new (to them) building for Cancer Services of Gaston County on Columbia Street - look forward to open house after all renovations.

Thank you again......from "our" heart to yours!

Senior Matchmaker

"Gladys Friday" has decided to start a new matchmaker service for seniors.  Since gas is so high and the price of food is also on the rise, she couldn't help but think of all those ladies that get so excited about taking casseroles to the men of the church right after the loss of their wives.  So trying to find a better way,  she decided to have a matchmaker service for seniors at the funeral home.

ONE STOP SHOPPING!

The ladies arrive in the church van, pay their respects, sign the register INCLUDING their phone number and bring in a casserole.

The name of the service:  "Casserole for Casketroll on a Roll"

Now I'm Gladys Friday....aren't you?

"All wrapped up"

Patient complained of potty problems.  Suppositories were suggested.  The patient said, "nothing happens when I use suppositories, I've tried them several times in the past!"  After further discussion with the patient,  there is a new policy, "give ALL patients a written explanation ~ how to use a suppository".   CLUE #1 : ALWAYS REMOVE the aluminum wrapper.....or else, you may never get through airport security again!

"Yearly check up"

Had a call for a request to schedule a "yearly check up."  I asked if there were any problems......she said,  "Well, seem to be running hot more often, need to make sure everything is greased up and have all the fluids checked,  I'm afraid everything is about to shut down and I would just feel better if he would look at everything while he's in there."  ~~ silence ~~

"Oh, and ask him if he will to please add some air in that left tire at the same time"

So.......I looked up the correct number for the "Auto Doctor"
(~~ now how's that for exceptional customer service ~~ I've been to the customer service class from Denise Price Thomas ~ check it out!)

Gallstones

Patient wanted to see her gallstones.  The physician took them up to her room and while she was still asleep from anesthesia, he gave them to her daughter in a specimen cup while saying, "when your Mom wakes, please give these to her."  The next morning, he was making rounds and the patient said, "don't forget Doc, I want to see those gallstones!"

The physician said, "I gave them to your daughter last night."  The daughter turned in fright and said......"You said to GIVE them to her...........and I did..........WITH WATER!!"

"Geri-berry"

Good morning! I'm "Gladys Friday!"

I want to tell you about a new invention for "us mature folk." My friend, "GG" has heard all about the "Blackberry" (phone) so she has invented her own.....calling it the "Geri-berry"

She has a string around her neck and at the end of the string is a sticky note pad along with a pen hanging from the string. Whenever she takes a phone call, she makes her notes, whenever she thinks of something she needs to do, i.e. grocery list, hair-do, etc. she writes it down and "sticks it" where she will remember. Now, if she could JUST REMEMBER WHERE SHE STUCK IT!

Have a great day.....and Memorial Weekend! Let's all be "Gladys Friday" today!

"Elderly?"

Well, good morning!
An "elderly" lady with a very big smile was in our office this week. We couldn't help but notice how happy she seemed, smiling at everyone. We asked her secret to happiness.....she said "well, I think it's because I smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and drink a six pack EVERY DAY"! We were SHOCKED! We asked her age......she is 34 years old.....and smiling.

Have a wonderful day!

Jordan's accident

"Gladys Friday" has a new appreciation for being "glad it's Friday"  On Monday of this week, May 4th my wonderful 18 year old grandson, Jordan had a horrible auto accident after work.   It was pouring  rain.  Fortunately,  a good samaritan saw the car that was smashed into a tree, they turned around and discovered him.  He was coherent enough to tell her his Mom's phone number and speak to her long enough to say "it hurts real bad Mom."  My daughter, Julie called and we met at the hospital, actually arriving before the ambulance......yet hearing them roar.  It was a very very scary time.

One of the fireman that helped cut him out of the car said "Jesus was in the car with that young man, no one could have survived that alone."  He is exactly right.  Seeing the pictures bring tears each time.  The engine is on the interior of the car, the dash on the outside.  The steering wheel is broken, the passenger seat is in the back seat.  Thank God no one was with him.

Jordan was taken to GMH where he was stabilized then transferred to CMC trauma unit in critical condition due to the extent of his injuries.  They had called for the helicopter but the weather was too bad.

His injuries include:
Concussion - could not remember anything about the accident or the entire week
Bruised brain - blood and spinal fluid
Pneumathorax
Fractured ribs
Liver laceration
Left wrist bones were broken - "broken off" per the physician
Right ankle bones were broken
There was a deep gash on his leg from the engine
There was fluid in his abdomen - multiple injuries due to seat belt and air bags

He had surgery on Wednesday to repair the broken bones, plates and screws were placed.  He stood yesterday with the help of a brand new chrome walker with wheels and a cradle for his broken wrist.  He took two steps today to move to the chair in the hospital room.  He is making incredible progress......as a matter of fact.....

WE are extremely blessed and amazed to announce that "JORDAN CAME HOME TODAY!"

My family and I thank you for all of your prayers and concern.  We all know without a doubt who was in that car with him, the fireman was exactly right.  There is only ONE spot in that car that isn't smashed......he was in it.  My friend said "he was sitting on God's lap" and she is right!

He is "bummed" about his summer camp job.  He isn't sure if the doctor will let him work.   With the progress that he is making, he may just RUN THE SHOW!

Please continue to pray for him. He has a long road to recovery but he has Faith, a wonderful attitude, sense of humor (now I wonder where THAT came from?) and determination........along with a BIG dose of pain.  He is a survivor!  Thank you Jordan! Hang in there buddy.  Nana loves you!  We ALL love you!

Thank you again.....I am "Gladys Friday and glad it's Friday" because Jordan came home!
