I wanted to share this true story by Denise Price Thomas (aka "Gladys Friday")
We had a man in the office that was causing a scene at the front desk. He was demanding to speak to the "person in charge!" so I was called for duty.
Patients in the lobby were fully tuned in to the man's conversation as he threw his hands around and voiced his opinion to everyone in a very loud, harsh tone (he was mean!).
"I CAN'T BELIEVE THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST CHARGED THIS MUCH JUST TO PUT ME TO SLEEP!!!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS! NO WONDER HEALTHCARE IS IN SUCH A MESS!!! ALL HE DID WAS STICK A TUBE DOWN MY THROAT AND STAND THERE AND WATCH ME SLEEP! THEN I GET THIS BILL!!!! I'D LIKE TO GET PAID JUST TO WATCH SOMEBODY SLEEP!" (and on and on...told ya he was mean!)
I felt very sorry for his wife as she stood there, not saying a word and looking very embarrassed. After listening & standing patiently for quite some time....waiting for his fuse to burn down, I said....."Sir, I am very sorry that you feel that way, but please allow me to explain. Actually the physician did not charge you to PUT you to sleep.....he ONLY charged you to WAKE YOU UP.....do you think it was worth it? You are standing here today because he woke you up."
(Of course, I personally thought I should have asked his FAMILY members that question, thinking maybe his warranty was about to run out).
He made a partial payment without saying a word and stormed out of the office. His wife came right back in and said "Please talk to me BEFORE his NEXT surgery!!"
Some people LOOK for a reason to be unhappy when happiness is all around.
