Another true story ~

My grandson attends Junior Assembly and is learning all about best manners, i.e. how to ask a girl to dance, how to dance, etc.

On the drive home after the "formal dinner" ~ when my daughter and I asked how it went.....here's his answer:

"Well, we learned to pull the chair out for the girls to be seated first, we learned how to use our napkin and we learned where the "tensils" go and when to use each "tensil."

We were a bit confused and very interested in hearing more....(things ARE a bit different these days so you never know).....so we kept asking questions. Trying his best to explain, he finally said,

"YOU KNOW.....YOU TENSILS....WHERE TO PUT YOU TENSILS AND WHICH TENSILS to use with which food, like salad, your meal, dessert!"

Perhaps they should learn to spell and pronounce the words along with how to use them? Do you know how to use "U-TENSILS?" I'm just saying'

I am reminded that "communication" is a two way street......listening to what others say and listening to what I say to others"

"Post Operative Orders"

Following a procedure, isn't it nice when we receive very detailed printed instructions upon discharge. When that happens, I am always IMPRESSED! Following a visit to the hospital with family this week:

Discharge orders:
Pre-operative blood tests were performed which showed normal liver & kidney function.
Post-operatively, these results have remained within normal limits.
During procedure, heart rate and breathing was continuously monitored and there were no problems.
A small incision was made in the abdominal area.
Surgical glue was used to close the incision.
There may be some discomfort once the sedation begins to wear off.
Pain medication has been given to the caregiver with instructions.
Plenty of rest & quiet is needed.
Activity should be restricted for 3 days.

Make sure plenty of liquids are ingested.

Do not be alarmed if there is little or no appetite, this will return.
Keep the cone around the head to prevent excessive licking of incision.

Please call our office should the incision open, you notice fever, chills, see signs of bleeding, swelling or foul odor.

I would title this the "POOCH" page: "Post Operative Orders Canine Hospital"

We could all learn from our Veterinarians, couldn't we? Remember that printed instructions assist in reducing phone calls to YOUR practice, unnecessary calls to the physician and or trips to the ER. Plus, it gives the patient "Bragging Rights" when they proudly read all about it to their family and friends!

PS ~ "Skittles" my "grand-dog" is doing very well post-operatively, thank you! And my grandkids are calling the "cone" on her head her "satelite dish" ~ they say she's picking up some great shows!

Alaska was WONDERFUL! What a terrific conference it was, some of the nicest people I have ever met. It was such an honor to be a part of the AKMGMA Conference. Make sure to add Alaska to your bucket list. On the Alaska Railway, we saw beluga whale, sheep, moose, bald eagle, beaver dams, dale sheep, glaciers, Mt. McKinley ~ the highest peak in North America all while riding along side the ocean. ~ ~ "And I said to myself....what a wonderful world" ~ ~

"Ready To Check Out?"

True Story:

Denise's sister has a broken wrist which post surgery is referred to as the "Wonder Woman Wrist"(steel plate and screws). Recently, she ventured out to shop alone, planning her trip to the drug store to pick up a few necessities. Checking her list, marking off the items gathered with the "good arm" ~ along with her wallet and car keys, she began making her way toward the front of the store feeling a bit overwhelmed. She began to wonder ~ ~ "WHY did I even TRY to do this alone!" She was on the verge of tears when she heard the lady from behind the counter say, "MAM, are you about ready to check out?" Sister said......"Well, I was really hoping to have a few more years left!"

Funny how things sound on "The Other Side of Healthcare" Hope you have a great weekend!

NPO with a twist ~ of lemon!

Another personal & true story as experienced by Denise & brought to you by "Gladys Friday":

NPO takes on a different meaning when......

You arrive for a procedure without YOUR morning coffee and the first person to "get you registered" is drinking the finest cup of coffee your nose has ever experienced.

You determine very quickly during registration that she really NEEDS the caffeine, she has had a bad night / bad day / bad year(s).....as it is showing on her face and through her actions.

You are privileged to her taking the time to answer a personal phone call while she is trying to get her printer to work by hitting it multiple times. The registrar tells her friend on the other line, "I wish I COULD go on break now, but I still have a PATIENT!" (Surprise! That patient has EARS!)

Denise is aware that we can always find something good in someone if we search for it so "Gladys" will report to you that the registrar was a multi-tasker; answering the phone while drinking her coffee & hitting (I mean repairing) her printer.....all while.....ummm assisting a patient??? Yeah, that too.

You are excited when the printing is finally completed and she calls for transport for you to be taken to your room.

You have finally escaped the aroma of that gourmet coffee and then you hear the following employee conversation in the hallway:

"What's the lunch special?"

"I think it's dumplings"

"Oh great! I missed dumplings last week, I'll pick up the order if ya'll will call it in."

Do you realize what thoughts pop into a person's mind when they have had no coffee? But ahhh ~ that IV was soooo yummy! Denise now wants to design "scratch & sniff" hospital gowns with a smell of gourmet coffee!

Innocent conversations ~ innocent words ~ yet sometimes creating SOUR impressions thus ~ "NPO with a twist of LEMON" May we be reminded to tune in to those around us ~ putting the patient & their needs first and foremost each & every time.....filling THEIR cup ~

"The Ailing Nurse"

A friend of mine was recently scheduled for surgery. Arriving in the pre-op area on the morning of his surgery, the nurse began to ask him the routine questions:

Nurse: "Have you ever had problems with high blood pressure?"

Patient: "No mam, no problem at all, I've been very fortunate."

Nurse: "Well yes, you are so lucky, I have had problems with mine! In fact, I'm on blood pressure medication now and it has terrible side affects, dry mouth, I can't sleep, just be glad you don't have any of those problems. OK, have you had any prior surgeries?"

Patient: "No mam, I've been pretty healthy."

Nurse: "Wow, you sure have been. I've had a hysterectomy myself, had my gallbladder removed and then had to go back with appendicitis a couple years later! I've had lots of minor surgeries too, like this mole right here, I've had those removed but fortunately, they were all benign."

(thank GOODNESS, he thought!)

Nurse: "Let's see here, now let's go on to review your FAMILY history"

Patient: "Excuse me mam, my surgery is in one hour and if YOUR family has medical problems like you, I'll miss MY SURGERY!"

He thought seriously about getting off of the stretcher & perhaps exchanging places with the nurse! It was obvious that he felt much better than she did!

There's a BIG DIFFERENCE in being personable vs. getting personal ~ agree?

Denise is looking forward to speaking for the Caromont Nursing Conference this week along with being the Keynote Speaker for The Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers & South Carolina Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

On Friday she received a standing ovation from Gaston Family Health Services as she addressed customer service issues ~ what a terrific group it was & a great time they had. Thank you all!

"Caught with her top down!"

What a beautiful morning it was. Over the hills, by the lake, enjoying the world with my top down. Things seem a lot different that way, you should try it. Very laid back and relaxed. The sunshine feels so warm on your skin, people smile at you so much more and they blow the horn A LOT! It's always a friendly horn though, not the mad one....you know the difference. People even let you enter into oncoming traffic, you NEVER have to wait! They are so gracious. It's amazing how different the world responds to you with your top down.

They even smile at you when you are CAUGHT IN THE RAIN with your top down! The rain ALSO feels great on your skin ~ no matter how old that skin may be. It will slow you down and make you smile. I was actually "singing in the rain"

~ ~ ~ "And I say to myself ~ what a wonderful world" ~ ~ ~

So, I decided I will take my Baby Bird out of her nest as often as I can. Her name is "Sunny Bird" and she's the same age as ME! She's a 1955 Thunderbird ~ Canary Yellow. Our birthday is Sunday ~ we will be out and about with our top down! Holden Beach ~ here we come!

"Gladys" entertained the Tarheel Thunderbird Club last Sunday ~ what a TREAT it was! She was so honored to be surrounded by a nest of beautiful BIRDS! Of course, hers was the prissiest!

Have you seen "Ms. Ida Marder?

Hey Friday Friends ~

I'm still alive! Many of you have checked in on "Ms Gladys" ~ she has been missing in ACTION but all is well ~ thanks for checking in.

Which reminds me.....we ALL KNOW "Ms Ida Marder" (as in martyr) We have each worked with her. She's the one that says, "Nothing around here ever gets done unless I do it MYSELF" and "I'm the ONLY one that will answer the phone, the first one here in the morning, the last one to leave, I work through my lunch, no one else does ANYTHING!" and "I SHOULD be the only one that gets paid around here, no one else does anything!" and then of course, "I even do the managers work!"

OK, we get it! "Ida" finally resigned from her position and low and behold, the lights came on the next day! The phones were answered, the doors were locked at the end of the day and in fact, the staff was much happier! Isn't it amazing that "Ms Ida Marder" is sometimes the "ONLY ONE that makes everyone ELSE miserable?" Oh and by the way ~ the manager carried on ~ didn't miss one beat!

It is my belief that we CAN BE happy while working ~ if "Ms Ida Marder" isn't HAPPY at her work, allow her to find happiness elsewhere. As for me ~ I want to be around "Joy Hunter" ~ she's a dear friend of mine. I'm "Gladys Friday" aren't you?

Denise (and "Gladys") are still writing their "Book of Characters" In the meantime, the Fashion Show is gaining popularity.

Good morning ~ little "Gladys Friday" today?

I've noticed when I'm out of town, I return to a house full of relatives! This happens every time. I walk through the house and can immediately tell there has been a family reunion here. EVERY ONE of my cremated relatives are gathered around the dining room table, the tv and have even settled down in the bedroom. They will just take over the place before you know it. Some friends came over and I asked them to be very careful...."Don't anybody sneeze" I said, we wouldn't wanna disturb the relatives. Perhaps we should call "Dust Busters!"

"One Happy Meal ~ Two Ringy Dingy ~ Three Strikes You're OUT!"

You all know Denise.....well, SHE is my boss, I guess that's the best way to explain her. She reminded me recently about the time she was interviewing applicants for a position that she had posted for the surgical practice where she was the administrator.

The first young lady appeared, shook her hand and had a seat in the chair across from her desk. Before any words were spoken, the lady said, "Do you mind if I eat my Happy Meal while we talk, I'm on my lunch break" ~ Denise responded, "Certainly, help yourself, by all means enjoy your Happy Meal." "Gladys" wished she had been hired because she always wanted a sandwich shop in the lobby!

The second applicant came in and during the interview....her phone rang and she asked Denise, "Do you mind if I answer this? I am expecting a call" DURING THE INTERVIEW! Of course Denise didn't mind at all. "Gladys" thought she would have made a wonderful person at the switchboard because she actually answered that call on the second ring ~ with a smile!

The third applicant came in with a long list of problems about the practice where she was still employed. She spent the first 15 minutes wanting to criticize everyone there, explaining that she was the only one that deserved a paycheck ~ "I do it all by myself, no one will help me, they won't hire any more help either!" So "Gladys" decided since she did it all by herself, she could probably find her way back to the door all by herself.

Funny how different things seem on "The Other Side Of The Desk" (Book in progress)

Last week ~ "Undercover Patient" (Denise) had a very pleasant experience by someone in a clinical setting. Compassion was all around. She made immediate eye contact, she listened, she wasn't rushed, she comforted the "very nervous patient" (aka me). It's so nice to find these treasures in healthcare.

This week ~ "Fashionable Characters" were on stage and Denise was the emcee for the show. The fashion show revealed personalities that we work with....from whiners to shiners. After all....it's what's on the inside that counts.

Next week ~ Denise & "Gladys" are excited to be going to Allergy Partners of the Piedmont. Invited for the third year in a row ~ Denise will lead in a "Motivational Makeover for the Medical Practice" for their staff appreciation day and training. What a terrific group they are. Can't wait to see you all! Of course they've requested "Gladys" to provide the humor again to bring up the rear! "Healthcare ~ The Funny Side Up!"

"Alma Victim" & Friends ~ Living "Down" To Standards?

Last week "Gladys" ran into "Alma Victim" and was quickly reminded that some people prefer to be a victim. They CHOOSE to carry baggage around with them for years, sometimes for a lifetime. They are never responsible for their own actions ~ there's always someone else to blame.

Speaking of accepting responsibility...."LOW & BEHOLD" (no pun intended) here comes yet another politician in the news whom I'll refer to as "Oscar" ~ "Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer ~~~" comes to mind but I bet this one WILL NOT WIN AN OSCAR! Perhaps we need to assign "Accountability 101" classes vs "Accounting 101" for everyone!

Thinking of both these "characters" (and many more) ~ I remember when we purchase a house....someone comes out to detect the septic system and they mark it. They find exactly where the entire septic tank and lines are and just how FULL IT IS ~ BEFORE you purchase the house. Nice! Wouldn't it be GREAT if we had a pole (that's what they use) so that BEFORE we HIRE someone, before we VOTE for someone, before we DATE or MARRY someone.....the ENTIRE SEPTIC SYSTEM was detected?!?!?! And LOW & BEHOLD ~ MARK IT!

As for me....I have made my choice ~ I am not at all like "Alma Victim" ~ I am "Gladys Friday" and I shall not WHINE!

"The Ballgame"

I'd love to share a story about my dear friend, Bonnie. We have been friends (more like sisters) for 25+ years, she has a wonderful daughter and a terrific son. Her son is Forrest. One day, Bonnie was in the stands during his baseball game when he slammed that ball. She jumped up from the stands and yelled, "RUN FORREST, RUN!" and the lady behind her scolded her severely by saying "That is SO MEAN! THAT is SOMEONE'S CHILD OUT THERE!" Bonnie turned to her and said....."he's MY SON and his NAME IS FORREST!"

Today, I am unable to find "Ms Gladys" because my dear friend Bonnie experienced a cerebral aneurysm this week and her address has been changed to Heaven. Bonnie was the most wonderful and caring RN, RVT that I have ever known. I would consult with her about a patient that needed to be seen and I have seen her put her purse back down, keys on her desk and take care of that patient before leaving on a Friday afternoon at 5:00 for her upcoming week of vacation. AND, she did it with a SMILE! THAT, my friends, is a special person filled with compassion for others.

I will use this time to reflect on how I may be a better person, making a difference in the lives of others just as Bonnie has always made in mine. Bonnie loved "Ms Gladys" ~ she loved humor and found it also to be healing. She loved kayaking, in fact, her kayak is on my pier ready for her next trip. She loved her "pink scooter" that she purchased when gas was so high 2 years ago.....and then she RAN OUT OF GAS WHILE DRIVING IT! She loved snow skiing, she loved LIFE and LIVING IT! She had her faith, her family, her friends and her fun! That girl loved to have fun. She said to me, "I want to live it up 'til the lights go out"

"Senior Prom"

"Bernice Beauchamp" (aka me) is "Gladys Friday's" (aka me) older sister. She was invited to be an "Undercover Patient" this week for a nursing home. She arrived via wheelchair and while patiently awaiting her admission forms she was approached by a gentleman / resident and was invited to go on a DATE! The conversation went like this:

"Would you like to go with me to the prom tonight?" (Mr. Resident)

"Sure, that would be nice, I didn't get to go to my high school prom" (Bernice)

"I'll pick you up at 7" (Mr. Resident)

At 7 pm on the dot, sure enough ~ there he was...in his wheelchair...at the door of my new room. He was wearing a nice shirt ~ even sporting a tie and had a GIANT SMILE on his face...and I do mean a GIANT SMILE! Rolling in our wheelchairs side by side down the hallway, we entered the room filled with music, a disco ball and lots of curious eyes. Glenn Miller's song began to play, "In The Mood" when he leaned over his wheelchair and asked me for a kiss. I leaned over and whispered to him, "Only if you'll go back to your room and get your TEETH!"

While he was wheeling very quickly down the hallway to his room....."Bernice" put the pedal to the metal and OUT THE DOOR she went!!! Leaving AMA!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Will I EVER get to go to a PROM? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I'm not giving up!

Following the "Undercover Patient" Assessment ~ Denise (aka me) returned to report her findings and hold a professional in-service education session for the staff. Comments following Denise's class:

"Give Me Just A Little More Time"

You know, my manager "Denise" makes up names to get her point across....well, today I have one for HER!

"THEY SAY" that the world will end tomorrow....well, I never was that good at math but.....The Book that I read from tells me that no one knows when that day will be.

So....."Justin Case" ~ I am gonna go ahead and take my arthritis medicine and "Justin Case" I will be taking my fiber as well and "Justin Case" I will have that drink of wine to help me with my memory (if I can remember to drink it) ~ "Justin Case!"

Now, you MEN out there....the most requested prescription by YOU (yeah, you know the one, it's your favorite).....well, go ahead and take it if you want.....but "Justin Case" that "4 hour rule" comes into play.....I'm not sure who will be here for you to call......I'm just sayin' You may wanna think that one through...."Justin Case"

As for tonight......I, along with "Justin Case" will be LIVE ~ singing in the crowd with CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD ~ to the tune of "GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME" Now, how appropriate is THEIR TIMING! Seriously, we will all be there....tonight!

Learning to "Rest A Spell" for our HEALTH

Remember my "attempt" to learn Tai Chi? Well, I'm determined to learn (to relax). So, during the class, our instructor said to pretend that we are protecting "sparrow eggs" in our hands. I looked down at my poor clinched fists (looking as if I were about to punch someone out) and was a bit embarrassed that I was CRUSHING the make believe eggs. With the peaceful surrounding of the quiet nature and learning more relaxation techniques, again she reminded us of those make believe "sparrow eggs" that were now under our arms. WELL, I could almost FEEL THE YOKE running down my arms. It's safe to say that bird eggs are NOT safe around me....not yet anyway. Learning to relax is a challenge....but I promise to keep trying. FYI: I must be held accountable to this promise.

So, I decided to schedule a day at the spa ~ "The Sanctuary". The call went like this: I'd like to schedule for The Sanctuary next week please. Do you already KNOW which date you would be needing it? Yes mam, I would like to arrive on Tuesday if that's available. OH...OK, what did you have in mind? Well, I'd like a nice quiet room, something with an outdoor surrounding, lots of light and very quiet music. UH...OK, do you know how many people will be attending? Oh no, it's just for me, I'll be coming alone. I want the room all by myself and I'd like to be there a couple days before having to return to my busy life. There was a long silence......and then the lady said, "Are you sure you have called the right number? This is The Sanctuary Funeral Home

You see why "RELAXING" is so much trouble for me? I'm telling ya, humor just follows me everywhere. Just ask the attendees at the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) Conference in Asheville. Denise was the Keynote Speaker and then "Gladys" entertained them....and WHAT AN EVENING IT WAS! It was President John Cook's birthday....so "Gladys" sang "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to him personally (in front of everyone else) Terrific network of leaders! The Easter Bunny reminds me of years ago when my little girls were growing up. I started my own business to help buy their little Easter dresses (along with putting food on our table). I WAS the Easter Bunny ~ I would deliver baskets to children of all ages and hide eggs for Easter Egg Hunts. One very WARM (melting hot) day, all of the little ones wanted to play "pin the tail on the bunny" ~ we had fun....except when one of the parents asked "The Bunny" if she was feeling alright......referring to the back side of her VERY WHITE FURRY-FLUFFY bunny suit that had tiny fingerprints all over the tail and around the tail from all the melted CHOCOLATE. I looked like one sick bunny!!!

This year....at "Gladys" age.....I think she can just hide her eggs from herself....she seems to be forgetting everything else, I'm sure she will forget where she's hidden them! And she thinks she will just use her hair dye to dye the eggs....they'll be "blue" to match her hair.

As for Easter ~ I will always remember the "REAL" meaning of Easter and the miracles that happen every day because of The Third Day.

Well, "they" told me that my metabolism would slow down at my age, I just didn't expect it to STOP! After noticing some unwanted changes, I signed up for "SOMETHING NEW" ~ a Tai Chi class. The "SOMETHING BORROWED" was exercise clothing from a friend. I arrived early to class hoping to "warm up" before anyone else arrived. After bending, stretching, pulling, tugging and jumping jumping jumping....I FINALLY got into those leotards! At that point, I was just too exhausted to try any of the exercises.....perhaps it will get easier. Oh and the "SOMETHING BLUE".....well, you should SEE my LEGS & ARMS from all of the tugging on those leotards!

As CWJC Board Members & Friends ~ "Gladys Friday and The Peeps" ~ (friends Jody, Wavey & Mona) ~ will be performing karaoke tomorrow morning: "Stand By Me" to raise money for Christian Women's Job Corps during The Community Foundation Event ~ Wish us luck!

I saw an ad in the newspaper recently that read: "Wedding ring and wedding dress for sale, slightly used."

The ad just below that one read: "Well seasoned golf clubs and fishing poles for sale, cheap!"

The following ad read: "Need to purchase cemetery lot asap!"

....and my imagination immediately started ~ ~ ~ I bet there was someone that was just "dying" to get in it....and I bet he won't be needing his golf clubs & fishing poles anymore.

Sometimes you can put two and two together to make a great story ~ enjoy your weekend!

TRUE STORY:

"Gladys" has a YOUNG friend that was very nervous about her first gynecology visit. She told the nurse just how nervous she was. The nurse comforted her and gave her a nice warm sheet, trying to make her more at ease. When the doctor came into the room, he introduced himself and as he proceeded to begin the exam.....he began LAUGHING OUT LOUD! Much to the embarrassment of the young patient.

"What is so funny?!?!" she timidly asked. He said "You have the longest toes that I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!"

We always want to leave a lasting impression with our patients.....which way do you want them to remember YOU?

As a "Patient Shadow" you see lots of things from the other side of the healthcare desk. I was in the lobby and was quite entertained by a front desk person eating her breakfast at the check in counter.

A new patient walked up to the sliding glass window and signed in. The lady eating her breakfast paused long enough to find the NEW PATIENT paperwork. Using her tongue, she continued to clear her cheeks of the breakfast that she was very much enjoying.

Finding the proper paperwork for the NEW PATIENT....she handed it over to them on a clipboard....and APOLOGIZED while "FLIPPING HER BREAKFAST CRUMBS OFF OF THE PAPERWORK" ~ Now, is it.... "CUSTOMER, SERVE US? or CUSTOMER SERVICE?"

Reviewing a patient's history this week, a gentleman listed that he has had:

~ both knees replaced

~ bypass surgery

~ surgery for hip replacement

~ is hard of hearing

~ experiences dizzy spells

~ has poor circulation in feet & hands

When we asked his age he said....."somewhere between 83 and 87, I'm not certain but I'm so proud that I still have my driver's license ~ now just where did I put those things?"

"Lovely Gift"

"Gladys Friday's" senior friend received a lovely gift from her husband for Valentine's Day this week. It was a "see through" nightie. After seeing the expensive price tag, she decided she would just wear nothing and take the nightie back and just keep the money for Valentine's. That night when her husband saw her, he said: "you know, it looks like as much as I paid for that thing they would have at least ironed all the wrinkles out!" His family receives friends tomorrow night, funeral on Sunday.

Live from Pensacola, Florida.....it's "Gladys Friday" & Denise Price Thomas. 74 degrees, sunny, white sandy beaches and a wonderful dinner on the water, with a beautiful sunset. Most importantly, new friendships. This morning, Denise was the keynote speaker for Baptist Hospital, Baptist University Leadership Conference. This afternoon, Denise held a breakout session "Diary Of An Undercover Patient" To finish off the conference, "Gladys Friday" danced her way through the crowd bringing up the rear with a large dose of healthy humor. Hats off to the conference leaders for an event VERY WELL DONE ~ Mardi Gras Style.

"Hip Hip" Who RAY?

"Gladys" has two friends that have recently required surgery for a hip replacement. Both were having trouble walking, Max went to his doctor, had an xray and was returned home within the hour after being scheduled for surgery the following week.

Ray went to his family physician who scheduled him to see a specialist in 2 weeks who then scheduled an xray the following week and then scheduled an appointment for a follow up visit in 2 weeks at which time he was scheduled for surgery in 4 weeks.....

The difference ~ Max is a Labrador Retriever and is doing very well post operatively. Who Ray? He is still awaiting insurance approval.

Denise is looking forward to being the keynote speaker next week for Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Florida along with Ms. Gladys Friday bringing up the rear with a dose of humor.

A friend told me about their little girl who had strep throat and had been treated with antibiotics twice.....only to return for the third round. During the office visit with the physician, the doctor was confused and asked the question ~ "are you sure she used a different tooth brush like I'd asked?" The mother said, "Oh, yes doctor. Another friend told me about an experience at church. He said that during the prayer, the Pastor raised his hands over his head and said, "Dear God, if not for You, we would be but dust" and the child, tugging on the Daddy's pants leg asked in a loud voice, "Daddy, what IS but dust?!?!?"

While "traveling" ~ "Gladys" decided that the airport is a great place for SENIOR MATCH MAKING. She gets there early just to go through the pat down lane (several times).....hoping to meet...."Pat Down". She calls it her "SPEED DATING" adventures ~ with no strings attached.

This year, Denise & "Gladys" will have more experience with "speed dating" as they have been invited to speak for: Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Florida; Loma Linda University, California; and speaking in Anchorage, Alaska. So...."Pat Down" ~ watch out!

"Gladys" had fun this week entertaining CaroMont hospital volunteers, VP's and guests. What a great time we had!

Denise spoke with Independent Physicians of the Carolinas, Inc. ~ "Happy New EARS!" ~ Improving Communication with Physicians, Patients and Personnel.

Both were searching for their husbands. "Gladys" asked, "what does your husband look like, I'll help you find him?" and Ethel said, "well, he is 6 feet 2 inches tall, 36 years old, tan, muscular, full head of dark hair with crystal blue eyes and the sweetest smile you've EVER seen.....what does yours look like?"

Good morning! I'm "Gladys Friday" today, aren't you?

I want to tell you about my friend Jody White, Administrator for Gaston Urological. She has such a giving spirit, she is always thinking of someone else. This year for Christmas, she decided to give the gift of DEPENDS in honor of her physicians and staff. She and her husband built a large Christmas Tree with wrapped boxes of DEPENDS. After her presentation to the physicians & staff, the tree was delivered to Cancer Services of Gaston County to be shared with patients in need. What a wonderful blessing! Jody had asked me to write a poem to go along with her tree to present to the healthcare professionals of Gaston Urological so...."Gladys" and Denise turned their imagination on (they play well together) sharing happiness, humor and hope. Jody said they loved it and "we" hope you will too:

Update on "Gladys" and Denise:

"WE" enjoyed our first LIVE radio interview with Dr. Flora Brown, California on "Color Your Life Happy." That was fun (Denise was NERVOUS!)

Denise has been busy being a 'mystery patient' ~ making a list and checking it twice! Being an "Undercover Patient©" has it's perks, she has written a new song from one experience. She's also having fun presenting "Motivational Makeovers" for Medical Practices.

Thank you to Crisis Pregnancy Ministry for the invitation to speak for their Christmas Party for staff, families and volunteers. What a wonderful event! The money given to me as an honorarium will be used to purchase presents from the Angel Tree for the less fortunate children.

"Gladys" is looking forward to being the entertainment for Lutheran Chapel's Christmas Party tomorrow. Thank you so much for the opportunities to deliver smiles!

"Gladys" friend, Mr. Doom N. Gloom was ALWAYS complaining. Whatever his wife did for him, it was never good enough. A few of his comments were:

"this casserole tastes nothing like the one my Momma used to make"

"this coffee is too strong, wish you knew how many scoops Momma used to use"

"Teetering Tales"

A patient in the hospital was having terrible problems with diarrhea. After having an accident in his hospital bed and being terribly embarrassed, he decided to wrap the soiled sheets up and throw them out of his hospital window. A "heavily intoxicated man" just happened to be outside and his legs became tangled in the sheets as he staggered down the sidewalk. The security guard had witnessed the entire event but just had to ask, "What is going on here?" The "heavily intoxicated man" said, "well, I'm not real sure but I think I just beat up a ghost!"

True Story: Patient requested ~ Patient received

While speaking this week, a patient shared her story with me: She was having trouble going to the potty so she requested suppositories from her physician. Her problems continued so she returned to her doctor. "I've been using those suppositories that you gave me but I'm not having any luck." He said, "I didn't give you any suppositories." She said, "Yes sir, remember my last visit I told you of my trouble & asked you for suppositories?" He said, "yes, but I gave you STOOL SOFTENERS, did you USE them as suppositories?" he asked. She replied, "yes sir I did, AND I gave some to my SISTER!"

It's all about communication. She asked for suppositories. He gave her SOMETHING and she ASSUMED they were suppositories. Remember to say it "two times" for the "two ears" that are listening.....or should be.

Last week was inspiring & energizing! Denise was privileged to be the speaker for The NC Community College Business Officials Conference ~ Atlantic Beach, NC. Great audience, lots of energy, "moocho" fun, terrific DJ & dancing too. Thank you all for such a warm welcome. I've heard from many of you since the conference, thanks so much for keeping in touch.

Then it was on to Surfside Beach, SC to Grand Strand Community Church where I was the speaker(s) for Women's Retreat Weekend ~ Presenting: "Dinner with Modern Day Martha" followed by a visit from "Gladys Friday" delivering large doses of humor.

On Sunday morning, I was privileged to introduce to Grand Strand Community Church ~ "Diane Hart" ~ (the dying heart of a homeless woman) through a musical drama followed by a message on "Choices." Many people have struggles. They may not all come to us dressed as a homeless person but they have problems. Let's remember to keep our hearts wide open, our ears tuned in and our eyes as windows for genuine concern for others. Let's share the JOY, it isn't rationed.

What an experience we had the entire week. From Atlantic Beach, NC to Surfside Beach, SC....THANK YOU ALL ~ Also, thank you for the numerous contacts following my speaking engagements for The Joint Commission's Ambulatory Care Conference in Chicago. Medical Examiner Call

A second invitation for "Gladys Friday" & Denise Price Thomas brought us back to Chicago to speak for The Joint Commission. Once again, a GREAT GROUP of people truly "Making A Difference" ~ The Joint Commission's Ambulatory Care Conference.

A physician came up to me after my presentation to say that he was previously a Medical Examiner and in the middle of the night one night, he received a call from an intoxicated female with a question: "May I donate my body to medical science?" and the physician said, "Yes mam, you certainly may, but we will need it tonight!"

We were "traveling" on the big bird from Chicago today, the day of the "breaking news" so security was very tight, which is greatly appreciated! I had the privilege of having my first "xray" at the Chicago airport. I don't think it counts for having a mammogram though....because it was PAINLESS!

Hormones for chickens

"Gladys Friday" has a friend that is a food inspector. He was telling her one night of a certain brand of chicken that is injected with a type of hormone that makes the chicken breasts so large that it breaks their legs. "Gladys" vowed that she would NEVER eat that brand of chicken again. Ever since that day though, she has been calling everywhere and looking for the place to PURCHASE that hormone.....she's hoping it will work on her.

True Story:

The nurse brought a patient into the exam room handing him a gown and preparing him to be checked for a hernia. A few minutes later, another man joined him in that exam room and took a seat behind the door as they introduced themselves.

The physician came in, introducing himself to both and asked the patient with the gown, "what kind of problem do you have?" The patient said, "I think I have a hernia."

The physician examined the patient and it was found that he did indeed have a hernia and told the patient that he would need to be scheduled for surgery. The physician then turned to the other man and said, "Is this your brother?" and the patient said....."No, I had not met him until now." OOPS!!!

"Gladys" friend Earl E. Byrd just bought a new hearing aid and was bragging about it to "Gladys". He said, "this thing cost me $4000.00 but it is the Cadillac model, the best you can get!" So "Gladys" asked him, "what kind is it?" Earl said, "it's 3:30, why?"

Eye Exam

"Gladys" went for her eye exam this week. Things have really started to change. The first thing the doctor asked was, "have your eyes ever been checked?" "Gladys" quickly responded, "not that I know of, I think they have always been solid blue."

Then "Gladys" had a question for the doctor, "Have you been using that stuff to make your hair grow?" and he said, "Why do you ask?" "Gladys" said, "well, it looks like you've been spilling it in your EARS!"

I would say "she can see clearly now" wouldn't you? He said he didn't need to ever see her again.

Through "Gladys" eyes this week, Denise was privileged to see the joy on so many faces using "Laughter as Therapy" ~ I am so thankful for these opportunities (and so is Gladys)

"Patient Puppet"

A male patient was taken to the exam room as his wife trailed along behind.

When the doctor came in he asked the patient, "what am I seeing you for today?" There was a female voice coming from the corner saying...."abdominal pain." ~

The physician then asked the patient, "how long have you had this trouble?" the female voice again responded "about 2 months" ~

As the physician pressed on the patient's abdomen he asked, "does this hurt?" once again, the female voice from the corner said, "the pain is more toward the right" ~

Finally, the physician said, "I really think you need to make an appointment with YOUR gynecologist....now let's get back to my PATIENT!"

Speaking of "voice" ~ after a speaking engagement recently, someone from the audience asked, "is that your REAL VOICE?" I responded, "yes mam, you can't BUY this voice anywhere!" She said, "well, I'm from upstate NY and I've NEVER heard a more Southern voice" I mentioned that I will be speaking in October in upstate NY and she said, "Honey, they are going to really make fun of you and your accent!" and I said, "no mam, THAT'S WHY they hired me!"

This week "Gladys Friday" attended a very important professional meeting. Upon her arrival at home, her husband said....."You have SOMETHING on your rear end!" Coming closer to the WHITE attire, he pulled off a sticker that read:

Now this brings me to the question "what happened to friends that TOLD you when something was so obvious?

I'm just glad the "USE BY" date wasn't on there as well ~

"Gladys" took a walk down memory lane this week as she recalled her days of working with a physician by the name of "Dr. Ben Dover". He was a kind and gentle soul.....a gastroenterologist, of course. His wife's name was "Ilene Dover" They got along SOOOO well, he seemed to always be wearing a smile. I guess it was appropriate for their first child to be named "Star Dover" as he looked for every opportunity to "start over."

This part is TRUE: the following dictation was found in a patient's actual record:

"Rectal exam revealed a normal size thyroid" (maybe that's why Dr. Ben Dover retired?!?)

"Gladys Friday" recently had the privilege to participate in an evaluation & satisfaction survey for a clinic. She was pleased to see each patient being greeted with a smile along with kind and friendly words. Paperwork was quickly updated for every visit and seldom did patients have to wait. In fact, they had very few chairs in the lobby of the busy clinic.

On the way back to the exam room, the personal touch continued and new patients were given a special treat.

Once the physician entered the exam room, you would have thought they were "best friends." "Gladys" had never seen a patient immediately jump into the arms of a physician nor witness a patient lick the physician in the face.....until that day. They were treating each patient "like a dog"~ and tails were wagging all day long.

That was her first experience with the animal clinic. There's lots to learn from that clinic for sure. Oh, and guess what? Each visit was PAID IN FULL by the "guarantor" who actually THANKED the doctor while writing the check.....and smiling! I remember those days in healthcare.

"Gladys" apologizes for her tardiness this week. Her husband had surgery last week giving "Denise & Gladys" a few more stories to come.

We will sign off for now as "Mona Monday" ~ until Friday.

My doctor told me this week that due to my age, I should start thinking more about the here after. I told him that I've been doing that for quite some time now. I will go from one room to the next and have to ask myself, "now, what did I come here after?"

He also encouraged me to begin working on my will....so I have started the process and it's a "dead giveaway" for sure ~ but I'm following his advice.

Check out day at the hospital ~

After a lengthy stay in the hospital, a nurse walked into a patient's room handing him a brand new urinal and said, "if the specimen comes back clear, your doctor said you can go home today." The patient was very excited. He was feeling so much better that he decided to add some mischief to his departure.

When the nurse returned, she took the urinal and said......"Oh no, this looks very dark so don't get your hopes up, it may not be today"

The patient said, "Let me see it, I'll just run it back through" ~ as he turned it up and drank it!!!!! Of course the nurse was startled to say the least.....yet relieved when he offered to share his glass of ICED TEA with her. Humor is healing, isn't it?

Memory Problems?

A physician mentioned to a couple in their nineties that they may want to start writing things down to help them remember. One night the husband started into the kitchen and asked his wife, "would you like some ice cream honey?" and she said, "yes, that's nice....but you'd better write it down dear or you'll forget."

The husband said, "Sweetie, I can remember that"

"OK then, I'd like chocolate syrup on mine"

About 15 minutes later, he returned with bacon & eggs on a plate. She said, "where's my toast...you FORGOT my TOAST, I TOLD YOU to WRITE IT DOWN!!!"

"Needing a check up"

True Story ~

Over 30 years ago, "Gladys" uncle worked for a TV station where they had to manually monitor the TV transmitter every 30 minutes, noting the readings on a log. Technology came along and the brand new IBM machine would record the readings automatically. They continued to monitor the new machine for a while making certain it was working properly.

One day he noticed it was not working so he placed a call to IBM. The lady answering his call asked what the problem was. Uncle said, "well, I need for you to send someone out for a check up, it's skipping periods" ~ the lady began to laugh and asked, "should I send a technician or a gynecologist?"

"Serving with a smile = Service with a smile" ~ from "Gladys Friday"

Trip to the ER

Some senior friends of "Gladys" that live at the beach had a little bathroom remodeling job going on. The husband decided to paint the commode seat instead of buying a new one, "being on a fixed income and all". The wife did not realize the paint was still wet.....but quickly noticed while in use. She yelled for help, her husband attempted but failed. He then disconnected the seat from the commode and draping a sheet around her they take a trip to the emergency room.

When the doctor walked into the room, she was very embarrassed & said to him, "I bet you've never seen anything like this before!" and the ER doctor said, "Yes, actually I have seen lots of them, I've just never seen any mounted and framed!"

Moral of this story ~ a new commode seat is still cheaper than the ER co-pay ~ rethink your project!

"Not Compatible,,,HUH???"

True Story:

Denise thought she had a sinus infection so she went for an office visit. While in the lobby waiting to see her physician, she noticed a very nice senior couple signing in. She also noticed that there were no vacant seats together so she moved down to make that happen.

Noticing this, the sweet lady said, "Honey, thank you but we won't be sitting together....we just can't sit beside each other AT ALL, it's very frustrating, so complicated and it's just not worth it, it's just too much!"

Denise had already moved down so she was uncertain as to what she should do next.....

The lady's attentive husband walked over and sat down right beside her with a smile. He said, "It's really worse at night but she doesn't even realize it!"

She said, "No, it's MUCH WORSE DURING CHURCH, everyone in the church is talking about it!"

About that time, Denise's name was called to see her physician. At check out the couple, both using a cane for assistance, was leaving at the same time and Denise said, "it certainly was nice meeting you two, I hope you had a good visit with your doctor."

The couple replied, "No, not really, the doctor said we are NOT COMPATIBLE and he has to order two new ones...."

Obviously Denise had a very confused expression and they picked right up on that.....and quickly said....."IT'S OUR HEARING AIDS! They just make a horrible noise when they are anywhere close together."

Whew!! Denise was relieved! She was once again reminded that things aren't always the way they appear or how we may hear things as they appear. She was glad she found the time to lend an ear."

"MEN-ON-PAUSE!"

"Gladys" has determined that there is one letter missing in menopause.....it should be spelled as: "men on pause" ~

Here are just a few clues for MEN ON PAUSE:

She will ask for chocolate and if it hasn't appeared before her eyes within 5 seconds, she screams to HIM ~ "JUST NEVER-MIND!"

She will insist she is driving (wherever they go) ~ the a/c blowing in her face, no matter if it's 10 below.

She will want HIM to take her to a nice restaurant for dinner but when she can't zip her dress....and asks for HIS help and HE says, "Maybe we should just have Slim-fast"......let's just say that hopefully his funeral arrangements were made in advance because the crematory will be contacted.

From a sound sleep, she will fling the covers off of her (along with everything else).....it's not what HE thinks. HE should back away from that thought.....NO PAWS unless of course HE wants to see her CLAWS! Anything that touches her could very quickly be PAST-TENSE!

So "Gladys" has invented a MOOD SWING......which is powered by an industrial fan. For ladies that have "MEN-ON-PAUSE" ~ you just get into your mood swing (made from PURE USA COTTON), turn the fan to the highest volume while keeping THAT remote in YOUR hand!

Finally ~ I'm Gladys Friday.....and IT'S HOT IN HERE, where's the chocolate?!?! JUST NEVER-MIND!! (She's just a swingin')

WOW! Chicago is AWESOME! This is the first place that has ever greeted us with ALARMS! How thoughtful was that? We arrived at The Hilton and there were bells & whistles sounding everywhere.....downtown, uptown, all around. They "thought" it was a tornado warning but realized it was only Gladys blowing through.

Gladys and Denise spoke for The Annual Joint Commission Patient Safety Conference today.....we were all "Gladys Friday." What a terrific group!

6 MILLION people are expected to be right across the street this weekend.....to see "Gladys Friday" ??? or could it have anything to do with The Taste of Chicago? We shall see.

Anesthesia please?

"Gladys" sister was scheduled to have surgery but could not decide which type of anesthesia she would prefer. She was reluctant and very nervous about having an epidural. She wanted the opinion of "Gladys Friday" so she invited "Gladys" to go with her for her pre-op and to talk with the surgeon.

While there, the surgeon was explaining the different types of anesthesia. "Gladys" asked, "Doctor, just which kind of anesthesia would you prefer if this was your wife?"

The surgeon said, "NONE!"

SHOCKED and surprised by his answer, "Gladys" and her sister were even more confused.

The surgeon explained, "I would not use ANY anesthesia on HER.....(bad divorce) ~ and she could buy her own drugs.....in fact, with what I'm paying in alimony, she can START HER OWN PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY!"

Were you "Gladys Friday yesterday?" ~ This is a "SAD-urday" without The Friday Funny.

"We" visited with the administrator and staff of Allergy Partners, Winston Salem yesterday. What a GREAT TIME! Terrific group full of energy and teamwork! Lots of "ATTA GIRLS!"

"Gladys Friday" hopes that new & improved electronic health records will prevent "any & all typed" mistakes as listed below that are reportedly found to be in actual patient charts:

Patient was alert and unresponsive
The lab test indicated abnormal lover function
The patient has a rash all over his truck
I saw your patient today who is still under my car for treatment

We must remember that the same human beings that were trained as transcriptionists who TYPED medical records are now joined by those that haven't been trained........hmmmmm, just something to think about.

"Gladys" says.........."Say what you mean, mean what you say, just don't say it mean!!" which also goes for typing ~ so remember to: "Think before you blink & look quick before you click"

Ripe old age of 102

TRUE STORY:

A friend lived to be the ripe old age of 102 and confided in "Gladys" one day that she really needed to "hurry up and die soon." When "Gladys" asked, "what's your HURRY?" she responded with, "all of my friends passed away a long time ago and they probably all think that I have died and gone somewhere else!!!" (and you KNOW they are ALL TALKING ABOUT IT ~ I'm just sayin')

At her funeral, her daughter said, "I thought Momma would NEVER die!"

Remember to love, live and laugh every day.....even at the ripe old age of 102!

"Senior movie weekend"

Papa Henry wanted to have a movie night with his sweetheart, his bride of 60 years. He went to the movie rental store but only saw "Mickey Mouse" and other children's movies. He asked the young lady at the desk if they had "movies for adults" and she directed him to the "adult movie" section (without his understanding).

He rented "Unforgettable Summer" and remembering that he had met his sweetie during an unforgettable summer, he thought that was very appropriate.

Upon his arrival back home, with popcorn and his sweetheart, they began to watch "THE" movie. He quickly realized this was NOT the kind of summer he remembered. It was truly an "ADULT" MOVIE!

He was embarrassed to RETURN the movie and embarrassed to KEEP the movie for fear of their children finding it someday. Next time he will just stick with Mickey Mouse.

Be careful what you ask for......you just may get it!! Enjoy your l-o-n-g holiday weekend! I'm "Gladys Friday"

"Return to Sender"

A lady went to her gynecologist for her annual exam. She had been shopping earlier in the day and felt the need to "freshen up" a bit. So, once she arrived at the doctor's office, she visited the ladies room to do just that, using her handkerchief that she had in her purse.

Once in the exam room, the physician and nurse walked in, talked for a brief moment and began the exam. The doctor covered his mouth and QUICKLY LEFT THE ROOM. The nurse wasn't sure why, she thought he may have had to sneeze (???)......so she and the patient made small talk for a few minutes as they waited....and waited...

There was a knock on the door and a voice said to the nurse, "we need you out here!" Once in the hallway, the doctor explained. "I cannot do the exam, there is a STICKER with HER RETURN ADDRESS in the way!"

The song "Return to Sender" will never sound the same again......

Dear "Gladys"

"Thanks so much for the laughs at the Relay for Life Survivor's Dinner last week. I was hesitant about attending, I am going through so many emotions right now. However, your performance was just what I needed. I thank God for laughter everyday, although I don't get nearly as many opportunities at one time as I did last week. It was truly uplifting. Thank you again for the opportunity to lift my spirits through laughter. You truly have a gift! God Bless".

This letter was very humbling to "Gladys" and to Denise. Thank YOU so much! It is so rewarding to see the pain and suffering disappear from faces & minds, replaced by laughter.

I am thankful to see this through my heart & eyes. I am grateful.

Ornery non-compliant husband goes to doctor

Gladys Friday's ornery husband HATES going to the doctor! He had to go this week and when they called him to the exam room, he said, "Is it alright if my MOTHER comes with me?" (meaning "Gladys" and she is 16 years younger than he).

She was pushing him in the wheelchair and threatened to take him downstairs....TAKING the STAIRS!

While completing his paperwork, the nurse asked:

"Sir, who should we call in case of emergency?" He answered, "911"

She said, "No, I mean WHO should we call?" He answered, "your BEST doctor!"

She said, "Sir, I mean if we first call 911 and a physician, WHO should we call next?" He answered, "I guess the undertaker!"
